One Year With Jesus: The Living Bible
Published in Paperback by Tyndale House Pub (May, 1900)
Authors: James C. Galvin, Linda Chaffee Taylor, and David Veerman
Average review score:

Highly recommended
In over 20 years as a Christian, this is the best devotional I have ever read. It is thought provoking yet keeps the subject simple. Each day gives you something to ponder and the chronological order also puts a different approach on the gospels and Jesus' life. I would recommend it to anyone. In fact, I am buying several more as gifts for friends and family.

Great book to improve your walk with Christ
This is a great book for family devotionals. As a Christian it is all too easy to forget that others of whome have not yet given their lives to Christ don't really understand the 'Good News'. ONE YEAR with Jesus, is a compilation of the teachings and actions of Jesus. It is a concentrated form of the Gospel. It can effectively demonstrate to those that might be on the fence, the perfect love of Jesus, which is is the only thing that I think wins converts.

One Year with Jesus NLT
Published in Paperback by Tyndale House Publishers (01 August, 2000)
Authors: James C. Galvin, Linda Chaffee Taylor, and David R. Veerman
Average review score:

A Good Way to Focus on the Gospels for a Year
I wanted to spend a year with just the Gospels, rather than the larger New Testament or the even larger Bible, so I picked up a copy of this book. I have been very pleased. The selection for each day is taken from a harmony of the Gospels (and the entire harmony list is given for reference in the back of the book), so as the year progresses, you move quite thoroughly through the life and ministry of Jesus. Daily readings are accompanied by an explanatory text and an inspirational text. Just a few minutes reading each day gets through it, so it's not really much of a time investment. The translation is easy to read, but corresponds very well to more traditional translations. The print is a decent size (I read mine in a rather dimly-lit church) and the binding is holding the pages in. A word to Catholics considering this book: this book is published by Tyndale, a Protestant publisher, but I haven't found anything in the commentaries that is either anti-Catholic or significantly against Church doctrine. In fact, the only item I have come across so far is a little reference to Jesus' brothers and sisters, which is definitely a Protestant concept, but a rather minor one. I am enjoying this book a lot and am glad I bought it.

Rhythm & Meter Patterns

Average review score:

Excellent Rhythm Stuff !
Gary Chaffee's books are excellent and as a Teacher he has tought some Incredible players.

The stuff in this book is from basic to quite advanced and what I found Very usefull was the material on Polythythms and Metric Modulations.

This book will give you a good understanding of Rhythms and how they are created and on the C.D that comes with the book Gary plays the key exercices from the book.

Apart from the exercices there is a lot of Rhythm Theory here so you're knowledge of Rhythms will certainly increase by going through this book.

See also his other books and the books by Peter Magadini and Gavin Harrison.

Tyndale Handbook of Bible Charts & Maps (The Tyndale Reference Library)
Published in Paperback by Tyndale House Publishers (01 October, 2001)
Authors: Neil S. Wilson, Linda K. Taylor, and Linda Chaffee Taylor
Average review score:

A Bible Study Must Have!
This book is a wonderful resource for everyone interested in Bible Study. I think every church library should have this in the very least. For less than [$$] retail, you have detailed maps and charts to help you better understand the Bible. When I saw the word "charts" on the front cover, I was picturing a bunch of little tables with a bunch of references to people and places. These books contains so much more. Most of these charts that are useful to any Christian, whether new or well seasoned. Some of my favorites include "Making Choices in Sensitive Issues" (based on 1 Cornithians 10:32), "The Tweleve Disciples" (Mark 3), and "Time to Pray" (Acts 3:1). Although I haven't yet read this book cover-to-cover, I can tell you it is a refernce suitable for every Christian. One of my favorite features is the CD-ROM that contains .pdf files of all the materials in the book, including the maps in full color. I see myself using that feature in my group Bible Studies.

One Silent Night : Women's Stories of Christmas
Published in Paperback by Harvest House Publishers, Inc. (September, 1900)
Author: Janice Chaffee
Average review score:

Parenting speaker/author says, "Not just for Christmas"
A beautiful cover and beautiful content. One Silent Night is a collection of inspirational stories by women. Some are very eloquent and some simple. I found lessons and wisdom in the stories. As a speaker to parents with young children I was attracted to the story of "Deborah" in prison and thought her insights were valuable. This book would make a meaningful gift all year long!

Inspiring reading
This book is as cozy as a long, intimate conversation with a group of good friends. Written in short chapters, it gives a peek into Christmases past of a group of diverse women. I enjoyed it very much!

Wonderful Christmas Gift for the Women In Your Life
Beautiful cover. Beautiful content. Janice Chaffee's introduction pulled me into a Christmas delight. Diverse women with differing traditions and celebrations share their thoughts on Christmas. I loved it. What delighted me even more was the sound of the CD with the same name playing in the background as I curled up on the couch and caught the Christmas spirit.

If the Prodigal Were a Daughter: What the Parables Mean for Women Today
Published in Paperback by Harvest House Publishers, Inc. (January, 2003)
Author: Janice Chaffee
Average review score:

Just OK
I was curious regarding this book and purchased it based on the good reviews it received. I understand the author's intent to mirror the parables from a woman's point of view in today's way of life however, I wasn't intrigued. I did not find it hard to put this book down. I was bored at times, wondering when a story would end so I could move on to other things.

The book wasn't terrible however, I won't be recommending it as I do other books, nor will I be reading it again.

More than just the Prodigal
If the Prodigal were a Daughter is just one of 4 parables that Janice Chaffee paraphrases. Written in today's language with women characters, this book is interesting and thought-provoking! It made me stop & think and left me with new insights into Jesus' stories and how they apply right now.

Excellent analogies
Janice Chaffee's storytelling abilities are nothing short of pure excellence. She compels you to walk into the lives of "everyday" people and presents the parables of Jesus in an extrodinary, contemporary fashion. The reader is drawn into variables of these biblical stories as they are re-told through the eyes of women who witness and partake in circumstances that we face every day.
I would recommend this read to all who embrace a parable of Jesus as their own and will enjoy Janice's ability to perceive a personal relativity to each. This is a must for those who coin the phrase "I can relate..." as part of their vocabulary.
Take the journey for yourself.

Luke (Life Application Bible Commentary)
Published in Paperback by Tyndale House Publishers (01 February, 1998)
Authors: Bruce B. Barton, Linda Chaffee Taylor, Grant R. Osborne, and David R. Veerman
Average review score:

Somewhat helpful, but narrow focus
This volume (as well as the series in general), is somewhat helpful for application of the text, but it certainly should not be used in isolation. I found this one to be rather shallow in that it gives little time to the historical situation in the text. A better commentary that includes extra focus on application, but without diminishing original meaning and history, is the NIV Application Commentary on Luke by Darrell Bock.

Good commentary
This commentary is the third one written on Luke by the same author. It focuses on contemperary application of Luke's message. One might need another (more detailed) commentary to determine the original meaning of the text. Those with necessary training in the Biblical Greek should consult his two-volume commentary published by Baker.

The best practical commentary on Luke I've seen so far.
This is a great resource for preparing sermons on Luke, or even for just reading along while you read Luke in your own home. It's easy to read, and gives valuable insights. I'm glad I bought it.

The Thinker's Way : 8 Steps to a Richer Life
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (October, 1998)
Author: John Chaffee
Average review score:

Great study in critical thinking
The author, John Chaffee, Ph.D., is the Director of the New York Center for Critical Thinking and Language Learning and brings to us many years of research into critical thinking. The result is a book that teaches how to think critically and then apply those skills to everyday situations. The world can be very confusing with the tremendous amount of information thrown at us every day. How do you make a decision or analyze information to see if it is valuable to you or not? This book details how to approach the various challenges of life by thinking clearly. With an eight-step process to critical thinking, he provides information and exercises to get you going in the right direction. Whether attacking problems, dealing with difficult people, deflecting propaganda directed at you or just bettering your life through better decision-making and fewer regrets, the collective knowledge in this text points the way to clear thinking.

Chaffee illuminates a path to a fulfilled life via thought
How many times have you come out of the bookstore with a new self-help book that you're sure will improve your relationships, career, parenting, creativity, decision-making, communication skills, organization, romances--in a word, your life as a whole? In my experience, what often ends up happening is that you adopt a new method of working/relating/parenting/organizing/ communicating/loving for a short while before slipping back into old patterns and, in frustration, giving up. What a relief, then, that John Chaffee has written "The Thinker's Way," a book that promises to improve every area of your life, and actually does. Unlike other, more simplistic, self-help books, "The Thinker's Way" works because, in a manageable series of eight steps, it nurtures the most basic and important part of your being--your ability to think, make intelligent decisions, skillfully evaluate situations, and foster creativity in your thinking and in your life. Chaffee focuses on three key ideas--"Thinking Critically, Living Creatively, Choosing Freely". Aren't these the qualities of life we all strive for? This book has truly changed the way that I think. It has created me as a thinker who can effectively deal with complex situations, who can live a life of creativity, and who can make free, confident choices. The author calls to our attention the alarming fact that we have become a "nation of non-thinkers"--unsure of our opinions, awash with information, and confused when faced with complex problems and relationships. He imagines a "thinking world"--a world where each of us achieves our full potential, leading the most fulfilling life possible. Is this world plausible? After reading this book I realize that it is the kind of world that we would live in if everyone took the time to read, and live their lives, "The Thinker's Way."

READ THIS BOOK!!!
This book is not only well-written, but it works! And it works for every aspect of your life! If you want to inject some creativity into your life, read this book. If you want to make independent, thoughtful choices in your life, read this book. If you want to become a better thinker, read this book. If you want to communicate more effectively, read this book. If you feel like you constantly have misunderstandings in your relationships, or you just want to improve your relationships in general, read this book. If you want guidance in developing opinions and a moral code, read this book. If you want to raise "thinking children," read this book. If you want to create a meaningful life for yourself, read THE THINKER'S WAY. Evertime I'm faced with a complication in my life now, I know that THE THINKER'S WAY can help, and has helped. It helps you become a better person--something we all want to do, but often don't find the time to accomplish. I think that we can all use THE THINKER'S WAY because, after all, if reading it enables yout to create a life of meaning for yourself, isn't it worth the time?
